Stage 1 – Initial Training (3 Days)

Start Your Offshore Career

Our Banksman & Slinger Initial Training Programme is designed for personnel with little or no experience of lifting operations. Over three days, you will learn the essential knowledge, safety requirements, and practical skills to perform the combined Banksman & Slinger roles under supervision.

Unit 1 – Introduction to Lifting Operations

Unit 3 – Slinging Operations

• Principles of slinging

Stage 3 – Competence Assessment (1 Day)

Become Fully Certified

The OPITO Banksman & Slinger Competence Assessment is the next step for personnel ready to prove they are competent and fully certified. This one-day assessment confirms that you can safely and effectively perform the roles of Banksman and Slinger in real offshore operations.

Who Should Attend:

• Learners who have completed Initial Training and Workplace Experience Logbook

Course Content

The assessment includes two parts:

1. Knowledge Assessment

• Written test with an 80% pass mark

2. Practical Assessment
Unit 1 – Direct and Control Loads

• Communicate clearly with crane operators
• Maintain awareness of other ongoing operations

Unit 2 – Prepare and Sling Loads

• Determine load weight and lifting method
• Select and inspect lifting accessories
• Sling and secure loads safely
• Maintain a clear work area

Prerequisites

• Valid OPITO Initial Training Certificate
• Completed Workplace Experience Logbook OR equivalent employer verification

Stage 4 – Banksman & Slinger Competence Reassessment (OPITO Approved)

The OPITO Banksman & Slinger Competence Reassessment is designed for personnel who wish to become OPITO re-certified as competent Banksman and Slingers.

Prerequisites

Learners must hold a valid:

• OPITO-approved Banksman & Slinger Competence Certificate, or
• OPITO-approved Banksman & Slinger Competence Reassessment Certificate

Course Objective

The objective of this reassessment is to confirm that candidates have maintained the required:

• Knowledge
• Understanding
• Practical skills to perform the role of a Banksman and Slinger safely and effectively.

Course Content

This course is delivered as a practical assessment, where delegates must demonstrate competence in the following areas:

Directing and Controlling Loads

• Maintain clear and accurate communication with the crane operator
• Demonstrate awareness of other ongoing operations that may impact lifting activities

Preparing and Slinging Loads

• Determine and verify the weight of loads
• Select and check appropriate lifting methods
• Inspect and use lifting accessories correctly
• Safely sling loads
• Ensure the work area is clear and safe

Assessment

The OPITO-approved reassessment consists of:

• Knowledge Assessment
• Practical Assessment

Both elements must be successfully completed to achieve certification.

Certification

Upon successful completion, delegates will receive an:

• OPITO-approved Banksman & Slinger Competence Reassessment Certificate
• Certification validity: 2 years
• To remain certified, delegates must complete reassessment before expiry
