Working as a Banksman & Slinger in the energy industry carries significant responsibility. Lifting operations depend on people who understand their role, follow recognised safety requirements and can apply the correct practical techniques in a controlled and professional manner.
For personnel with little or no previous lifting experience, OPITO Banksman & Slinger Initial Training provides a structured introduction to the combined roles. It is designed for people who want to begin working towards competence as a Banksman & Slinger within the energy industry.
A recognised starting point
The OPITO Initial Training standard provides learners with the basic knowledge associated with Banksman and Slinger activities, together with an understanding of the relevant safety and regulatory requirements.
Rather than treating the role as a collection of simple lifting tasks, the course introduces delegates to the responsibilities that come with participating in lifting operations. This gives new entrants a clearer understanding of the standards expected before they begin developing their abilities in the workplace.
The course is completed over three days and includes 24 guided learning hours. Approximately 30 per cent of the programme is theory and 70 per cent is practical training, allowing delegates to apply what they have learned in a controlled training environment.
The importance of practical training
Banksman & Slinger duties cannot be learned through theory alone. Delegates need the opportunity to become familiar with the practical activities associated with the role while receiving guidance from experienced instructors.
The strong practical element of the OPITO course helps learners connect their underpinning knowledge with the work they may later carry out under supervision. It also allows unsafe techniques or misunderstandings to be identified and corrected before the delegate progresses into workplace experience.
This combination of theory and practical training is one of the main reasons to choose an OPITO-approved programme. It gives learners a recognised foundation while making it clear that further development will be required.
Understanding what happens next
Successful completion of the Initial Training course does not mean that the delegate is immediately considered competent as a Banksman & Slinger.
The certificate confirms that the learner has achieved the minimum training requirements approved by OPITO. It does not confirm competence in the role. After completing the course, the learner can enter the workplace and gain experience under the direct supervision of a competent person.
During this period, the learner must complete the OPITO Banksman & Slinger Workplace Experience Logbook before progressing to the Competence Assessment. The Initial Training certificate is valid for two years and eight months, and the required workplace experience and Competence Assessment must be completed within this period to achieve an OPITO-approved certificate of competence.
