Offshore lifting operations require knowledge, practical skill and a consistent approach to safety. Employers need personnel who understand their responsibilities and can contribute effectively to the safe movement of loads.
Professional lifting training provides a recognised framework through which employees can develop the knowledge and practical abilities associated with their roles. It also helps employers establish clearer expectations across their lifting teams.
Creating a common standard
Employees may arrive in an organisation with different backgrounds and levels of lifting experience. Without suitable training, individuals may have different understandings of the procedures, responsibilities and safety requirements associated with lifting operations.
OPITO Banksman & Slinger Initial Training provides learners with basic knowledge of the combined roles and the safety and regulatory requirements associated with those activities. The programme includes 24 guided learning hours and places a strong emphasis on practical training.
For employers, using an industry-recognised training standard can help create a more consistent foundation across the workforce. Personnel who have followed the same training framework are more likely to share an understanding of the role and the standards expected from them.
Developing practical ability
Lifting roles are practical, so training needs to provide opportunities for learners to apply their knowledge.
The OPITO Initial Training programme is approximately 70 per cent practical and 30 per cent theory. This balance allows learners to develop basic practical skills while also understanding the safety and regulatory principles that support them.
Practical training gives delegates an opportunity to learn in a controlled environment before progressing into supervised workplace experience. It also allows instructors to identify misunderstandings and correct unsuitable techniques at an early stage.
Supporting a structured route to competence
One of the most valuable aspects of the OPITO pathway is the clear distinction it makes between training and competence.
Completing Initial Training confirms that the delegate has achieved the minimum training standard. It does not mean that the learner is already competent to carry out the role independently.
The learner must progress into supervised workplace experience, complete the required logbook and then successfully undertake the OPITO Competence Assessment. The assessment establishes whether the individual has the knowledge, understanding and practical skills needed to fulfil the role safely and effectively.
This structured process helps employers distinguish between an employee who has received introductory training and someone who has formally demonstrated competence.
Maintaining competence
Competence is not treated as a one-off achievement. The OPITO Banksman & Slinger Competence Assessment certificate is valid for two years, after which the individual must follow the appropriate reassessment route to maintain current certification.
Competence Reassessment establishes whether an experienced Banksman & Slinger has maintained the competence requirements of the role.
For employers, monitoring training, workplace development and certification dates can form an important part of workforce planning. It helps ensure that personnel are following the correct stage of the pathway for their experience and responsibilities.
